The Atlantic beaches are about 20 miles from the inn, but Gwen is quick to point out the other diversions to be found in this landlocked region ofDelaware, such as canoeing and fishing at Trap Pond State Park and exploring the historic districts of Bethel and Laurel. An antiques dealer, Gwen sells collected pieces in a barn next to the inn.
Tops among the activities here is bicycling, a pastime Gwen has encouraged by organizing the Biking Inn to Inn Delaware program (tel. 800/845—9939), a three-day tour that includes stays at Spring Garden, the New Devon Inn, and Eli’s Country Inn. The route takes bikers along the flat back roads of the Eastern Shore and offers opportunities for crabbing, bird-watching, and swimming.
