It’s been more than 10 years since Charles and Judy Powell said good-bye to suburbia and moved to downtown Wilmington’s fashionable Baynard Bouleyard to realize their dream of opening a bed-and-breakfast. The attractive house they chose, in the Triangle section of town, is a wonderful six-bedroom dwelling with a red-tile roof, neo-Georgian elements in the facade, and eccentric, fluted columns with Doric capitals. Inside, there’s a graceful “good morn-ing” staircase (couples descend via separate routes and meet for a kiss at the landing), a window seat, large leaded windows, and more fluted columns. Equally noteworthy are the elaborate Muellertile surroundingthe library fire-place, and Judy’s mammoth industrial range, where she cooks breakfast.
The Powells attract a frequently returning business clientele (they offer open meeting space for their business guests), but families do well here, too, because of the proximity of Brandywine Park and Children’s Zoo, and the easy drive to the many Brandy wine Valley attractions.
