Cheap Bed and Breakfast in Delaware: Wild Swan Inn, Lewes

There’s a pink Victorian house across from the library in Lewes where you can be serenaded with music from a 1912 player piano, an original 1908 Edison phonograph, or a mahogany pre—World War I Victrola. The 1900s house was built and originally occupied by Captain Arthur Hudson, who ran the Fenwick Island Lightship. Inside the classic Queen Anne Victorian-style home are high ceilings, delicately carved scroll-work, lavish wallpaper, antique furnishings, lots ofeclectic collectibles, and typical Victorian detail in pattern and color.
During their five years as innkeepers, Hope and Mike Tyler have attracted lots of media attention. The recipe for their signature honey banana raisin bread has appeared in more than one cookbook. Guests are treated to even more than that: a big formal breakfast in the dining room under brass “gasolier” chandeliers. At the end of a busy day you may look forward to a cool glass of sun tea or a cordial on the porch gazebo or in the privacy of the pool side patio garden. There’s plenty of fine, fun dining in Lewes, just a walk away. When you return to your room at night, you’ll find it’s been freshened and a plate of cookies will be waiting at your bed-side.
