The William Penn is a handsomely restored, impressively maintained Colonial structure that is modest in its air and amenities. Soft, wide-board Delaware-pine floors, a claw-foot tub, and an 18th-century chandelier in the dining room take guests back to an earlier era. The bedrooms—one with king-size bed, another with one set of twins, and two with doubles—are carpeted blandly and furnished with pine antiques. If air-con-ditioning turns you off, there are ceiling fans to keep both second-floor units cool and ventilated in the summer.
You’ll find the William Penn a perfect jumping-off point for touring Longwood Gardens, the Brandywine River Museum, Winterthur, the Hagley Museum, and Nemours Mansion. Cyclists in particular will delight in the area: The house borders Battery Park, which runs right along the river and has a 2-mile biking path and promenade, as well as benches, picnic tables, tennis courts, and play areas for children.
4 doubles with 2 baths (can be shared or private). Air-conditioning, TV in 3 rooms. $60—$85; Continental breakfast. No credit cards. No smoking indoors, no pets.
