Seascape painters and beachcombers would do well on Solomons Island, a fin-ger of sand connected to the mainland by a bridge, bounded on the west by the Patuxent River and on the east by Back Creek Bay. They’d do well at Carol Pen-nock and Lin Cochran’s Back Creek Inn, too. Dating from the 1880s, the robin’s-egg-blue waterman’s house is unprepossessing from the front, but inside Carol has used her grandma’s quilts and Lin hergreenthumb to brightenup the guest rooms. Lin’s catering skills are evident in the homemade breakfast breads and muffins. The main house and an annex added in 1984 wrap around the heady-smelling herb garden, which in turn surrounds an outdoor whirlpool bath. From the garden and patio it’s fun to watch the water traffic on Back Creek.
