Just south ofFrederick, inthe historic village of Buckeystown, you’ll find the Catoctin Inn right on the picturesque main street. Get there before Hollywood discovers this beautifully restored stretch of 18th-century structures. You couldn’t want a more central location for touring Maryland’s Civil War sites and memorials, and it’s within a short drive of Harpers Ferry, Antietam, the Monocacy Battle-field, Frederick, the C&O Canal, Sugar-loaf Mountain, the Appalachian Trail, New Market (Maryland’s antiques capital), and the world-famous Lilypons Aquatic Gardens (tel. 800/999—5459). In summer, you might enjoy a visit to Frederick to watch the Keys, a Baltimore Oriole farm team.
The inn, circa 1780, shares 4 acres with a 1890s carriage house, now used as a conference center. All guest rooms have queen- or king-size beds, cable TV, phones, and private baths; 12 rooms feature a whirlpool tub. A full hearty breakfast is served in the dining room or on the sunporch. Business people will find the inn well suited for their traveling needs; the large lawn and wrap around veranda are ideal for special functions and events, and the conference center can accommodate 130 people.
