Buckeystown, on the Monocacy River, is a lovely collection ofFederal and Victonan homes and buildings, among them a mansion built in 1897 and an 1884 church that are the grandest structures in town. Both have been converted into accommodations for guests. The mansion is a white frame building with three stories (one might say layers, since it looks like a wedding cake) on a 2½ acre lawn with azaleas. Owner Dan Pelz has created a true country inn crammed with eccentric memorabilia, including an American In-dian collection, vintage postcards of Harpers Ferry, and Victorian furniture. Every day of the week an evening meal is served family style, with such dishes as consommé Madrilene, London broil in port sauce, and blueberry parfait. Plan to dress for it—this is a festive place. For the traditional-inn feeling, we suggest the Winter Suite or the Love Room.
