The main dining room, a soaring chamber two stories high, has an open wood-burning fireplace at one end. The food is excellent, and the silent, unobtrusive servicelives up to the British tone of the place. Boat owners would find it a welcome change from galley fare and marina dining. The employees run the inn impeccably. The only conceivable drawback is the unfortunately situated residential development across the harbor, but that’s hardly reason for second thoughts. Service, from the moment you enter the reception hail, is exemplary. General manager Stephen Creese sees to it that mineral water, ice, a plate offresh fruit, and homemade cookies await guests in their rooms; the rate includes a daily newspaper, full English breakfast, and afternoontea. The addition of swimming and exercise facilities, a traditional English snooker room, and a conservatory has extended the house’s pleasures, and nearby recreations are plentifal: The inn arranges outings for everything from golf, fishing, and sailing to helicopter tours and riding lessons. It’s worth noting, for business travelers, that the man-agement accommodates any and all conference and meeting requirements.
