Cheap Bed and Breakfast in Maryland: The National Pike, New Market

The National Pike is located in the historic district of New Market, “The Antiques Capital of Maryland.” Built in three sections between 1796 and 1804, this Federal-style brown-brick building was topped with a tower at the turn of the 20th century. Tom and Terry Rimel are the proprietors; he’s a master at slate roofing, which sparked his interest in restoring old homes. The two have done a fine job on the National Pike, whose parlor has Williamsburg-blue paneling, a fireplace, and two armchairs for watching the action on the historic turnpike out front. There is also an organ, played by their son, who became organist for the local Episcopal church at the age of 10.
The two snug guest rooms in the rear section have brass-and-oak beds and are decorated in a country style; they can also function as a suite. There’s a new double room with private bath in the 1804 section of the house. The long back-yard has azalea gardens, a smokehouse, and a carriage house from the 1830s.
