Vienna, Maryland, is a genuine backwater on the Nanticoke River and probably quieter now than during the Revolutionary War, when the British made a habit of raiding the town. It is home to this small inn, which has been lovingly restored by Elise and Harvey Altergott.
Ask Harvey to show you the wood-case door locks and the paim-trees-and-coconuts carving above the entryway, and take notice of the gray, green, and blue wainscoting and the gracefully curving stair. Upstairs is the River Room, the first choice because of its four-poster bed, working fireplace, Colonial wall sconces, and river views.
