In the center of town close to the Washington Mall and the beach, this 1890 house was built for aphysician and named after
Cape May’s Dutch discoverer. In keep-ing with its heritage, the house, which became an inn in 1979, is furnished with Victorian antiques and Dutch accents, in-cluding a collection of delft blue china. What was the doctor’s office is now a two-bedroom suite, and his examining room is now its bathroom, with the original tiles and medicine cabinet. If you like your bathrooms over a century newer, you can opt for a cozy third-floor room under the eaves. Its enormous new bath, previously a guest room, has both a two-person whirlpool and shower.
Outside, the wonderful wraparound ye-randa, bordered by a sea ofpurple impatiens and outfitted with wicker furniture and Victorian wind curtains, is an inviting spot for breakfast or tea in warm weather. A small, walled courtyard with a tulip garden is perfect for reading and relaxing.
