Cheap Bed and Breakfast in New Jersey: Cashelmara Inn, Avon-by-the-Sea

Sitting on the appropriately named Lakeside Avenue, just off the equally appropriately named Ocean Avenue, this 1901 house looks out on both Sylvan Lake and the Atlantic. Professional Irishman Marty Mulligan was smitten by the near-perfect location, so he bought the inn in 1986 and named it the Gaelic word for “house by the sea.”
From the background music to a stained-glass window ofa harp, reminders of Ire-land are everywhere, as are views of lake or ocean. All units face one or the other, though third-floor rooms with cute window seats tucked under dormers have more limited views. A recent top-to-bottom renovation revamped rooms, created a glassed-in breakfast area with private tables, and added twin antiquesfilled parlors in warm red. The formal air is softened by cheerful innkeeper Mary Wiernasz and dog Cody—surprisingly, not an Irish setter but rather the friendly resident retriever.
The most unusual addition to Cashelmara is a Victorian theater. Here you can spend an evening or rainy afternoon on velvet-covered antiques beneath a tin ceiling watching turn-of-a-different-century movies on a big-screen TV with surround sound. Popcorn is included.
