Cheap Bed and Breakfast in New Jersey: Chestnut Hill on the Delaware, Milford

The only thing separating Chestnut Hill’s rocker-lined veranda from the river is a sloping bank and a set of train tracks; once a day a train chugs slowly by. You can walk along the tracks to the cute little town of Milford or to cliffs where Native Americans once lived; go bicycling, canoeing, or tubing (rentals nearby); or do the obvious thing—sit and watch the traffic on the old metal bridge to Pennsylvania, the river, and the river’s wildlife. Rumor has it that a bald eagle was recently spotted soaring over the Delaware.
Innkeepers Rob and Linda Castagna have returned the exterior of the house to its original colors, while inside they have tried to balance Victorian and other more comfortable furnishings. The an-tiques-laden formal drawing room has a 9½-foot-by-13-foot black-walnut apothecary unit and the wedding dress ofa previous owner (only three families have lived in the house since it was built in 1860). In contrast, the two third-floorbedrooms, rented only to those traveling to-gether, arelittered with 150 teddy bears. A country cottage comes with tropical hues, carousel horses, a raft of modern conveniences, and absolute privacy.
