Cheap Bed and Breakfast in New Jersey: Holly House, Cape May

This immaculate guest house is one of the Seven Sister properties, seven identical houses built in 1891 on the lot of a former hotel as summer rentals for wellto-do families. It is notable for its carefully detailed green-and-red exterior and the theatrical personality of its co-owner, Bruce Minnix, a TV director who appeared in the music video What Might Have Been for the country group Little Texas. (Ask him to show it: There won’t be a dry eye in the house.) Bruce was also mayor of Cape May and fought for the preservation and restoration of the town. He helped create its popular walk-ing tours and produced and directed the video Victorian Cape May. His wife, Corinne, whom he describes as “the head honcho,” runs the house and is often the person to greet visitors.
Guest rooms have high ceilings with ceiling fans, bright prints and fabrics complementing crisply painted or papered walls, and several large windows, from which you can get “ocean glimpses.” Two rooms on the third floor have a connect-ing door, useful for families. Furniture runs the gamut—some antiques original to the house, some family pieces, and some Salvation Army treasures—but the overall impression is modern and free of clutter.
