Across Ocean Street is the elaborately painted (try counting its colors) Queen Anne—style Queen’s Cottage. Rented to families or others traveling together, it is not open to other guests. The two rooms, one of which has a gas-log fire-place, have whirlpools for two and TVs. (A new addition to the empire, the separate, European-style Queen’s Hotel of-fers such modern amenities as in-room phones, coffeemakers, and heated towel bars as well as policies to conserve water and energy.)
Despite the adherence to period details, the Queen Victoria lacks the antiques-cluttered spaces and stiff formality of other Victorian inns. In the cozy Arts and Crafts—style parlor, with its brick fireplace, player piano, and mountain of scrolls, is a basket of Madeleine books, a signal that children are welcome. (A crib, high chair, trike, and blocks are also available.) In fact, all guests will feel comfortable and royally treated here.
