Cheap Bed and Breakfast in New Jersey: The Wooden Duck, Newton

Bob and Barbara Hadden just wanted a place in the country, but on their first visit to this l978 luxury home on 17 acres surrounded by Kittatinny Valley State Park, they were persuaded not only to purchase it but also to turn it into a B&B. The Wooden Duck, named for the Had-dens’ prominently displayed collection of hand-carved ducks, has country in abundance. Deer wander across the property, and the bird feeder outside the dining room window hosts chipmunks and the occasional bluebird. You can hike or cross-country ski from the patio to the trails in the park or simply enjoy the view from the pool deck.
Those so inclined can remain indoors, snacking on cookies, playing bumper pool, or working puzzles downstairs in front of the double-hearth fireplace. Chocolates and terry-cloth robes are just some of the amenities provided in the large bedrooms in the main house and the more privately situated accommodations in the carriage house.
