Hilltop Cottage is an easygoing, reason-ably priced alternative to the ersatz log cabins and tacky motels that proliferate in this popular resort area. Running a bed-and-breakfast comes naturally to retired educators Anita and Charlie Richards. Anita’s parents lived in the 1 1-room house, and her mother rented rooms to tourists. During the 1920s and early ‘30s the building housed students of the legendary Metropolitan Opera diva Marcella Sembrich, who is honored in the Opera Museum just a short walk from the house.
The moldings, floors, and banister in this vine-covered house are made of Adirondack fir, and allthe antique beds are coy-ered with printed quilts from the 1940s and ‘50s. The Richardses’ German her-itage is evident throughout the house, from the art on the walls to Anita’s German apple pancakes at breakfast. Those with allergies please take note: Although the Richardses don’t accept pets, they have two cats and a dog.
