Cheap Bed and Breakfast in New York: Plumbush Inn, Cold Spring

Once the estate of American-born mar-quise Agnes Rizzo dei Ritii, Plumbush was transformed into an elegant Hudson Valley restaurant in 1976. Several years later, Swiss-born owners Giere Albin and Ans Benderer, who grew up in the hotel-and-restaurant business, decided to convert the Victorian mansion’s unused second floor to overnight accommodations.
The grounds are fenced in and nicely landscaped; the buildings are painted— well, plum. Inside, the walls of the Marchesa Suite are covered with flowered paper; the room is furnished with a large iron-and-brass bed and Victorian settee and has a full bath. Two smaller rooms have similar Victorian appointments and private baths.
Breakfast includes homemade croissants, pastries, jams, juices, coffee, and tea and may be served in the guest rooms or on the small downstairs porch. Local attractions include lush golf courses, state parks for hiking and cycling, and the antiques shops in Cold Spring, five minutes away.
