Simmons Way Village Inn, set on a wide expanse oflawn in the middle of Miller-ton, was built by the village’s first merchant in 1854 and was transformed into a handsome country inn in 1983.
Current owners Richard and Nancy Carter (he is a management consultant and educator, she is a bank vice-president)bought Simmons Way in 1987 with the idea of running an inn that combined “European civility and American comfort” and served the best in international cuisine. The Carters’ son, Erich, works closely with his parents managing the daily activity of the inn.
There are two common rooms on the first floor, one of which opens onto the inviting front porch, where guests may eat breakfast in the warmer months. The second room is home to Max the parrot, who may say hello if he’s feeling sociable. The main dining room was added in 1986 but is hard to distinguish from the original structure.
The bedrooms (six on the second floor and three on the third) are furnished with English and European country an-tiques. Each has its own charm; but Room 5, with its rose-floral wallpaper, queen-size antique iron bed, embroidered bedspread, wicker love seat, and 6-foot French bathtub with hand-held shower, is perhaps the most romantic. Room 2, the Bridal Suite, offers a private covered porch, marble fireplace, and queen-size crown-canopy bed; and Room 4 has peach walls, an English brass canopy bed, swag curtains, and a stripped-pine armoire.
