This Tudor-style manor house set amid 442 gracious acres outside the hamlet of Amenia figured prominently in American literary and political history. It was once home to Myron B. Benton, whose circle of friends included Emerson, Thoreau, and John Burroughs. The estate served as a gathering place for the likes of Sinclair Lewis, Teddy Roosevelt, and Lewis Mumford in the early 20th century, and black leaders formed the NAACP under its roof.
Today Troutbeck also serves the movers and shakers of the corporate world as a conference center during the week. On weekends, however, it is transformed into a country inn, the vision of genial innkeeper Jim Flaherty and his partner, Bob Skibsted. The atmosphere makes this a popular place for weddings, so be-ware, you may find yourself caught in the middle of someone else’s romantic celebration.
The Troutbeck package includes three gourmet meals a day, an open bai and access to all sorts ofrecreational activities, ranging from tennis, swimming (indoor and outdoor), fishing, and cross-country skiing to strolling through walled gardens and watching video movies or major sports events on cable TV.
