At the foot of the bridge to Milford, New Jersey, is a three-story 1836 Federal brick building that has been a residence and a general store. In 1982, with a dozen years ofinn experience behind them, Beatrice and Charles Briggs completely transformed it into a terra-cotta-colored bed-and-breakfast. You will find American country antiques, reproductions, and con-temporary furnishings. Five rooms on the riverside have four-posters, country quilts, and screened-in private porches with breathtaking views of the moi’ning mist. A spiral staircase leads to a huge third-floorpenthouse suite so ultra-high-tech you might think you were in Man-hattan. But the view—as though you’re suspended over the Delaware—tells you otherwise. In winter, the cozy sitting room is a perfect place to gaze out at the snow falling on the river. In summer, you can watch people paddle canoes and float lazily along in inner tubes—or you might indulge.
