Cheap Bed and Breakfast in Pennsylvania: Churchtown Inn, Churchtown

Across from the historic church in this tiny Pennsylvania Dutch village is the Churchtown Inn, a circa-1735 Georgian fieldstone inn and carriage house that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From 1804 to 1853 the inn was the home of Edward Davies, a member of the 25th Congress and a state legislator. Once you enter the restored mansion you will know it was built for the gentry.
To the right of the entryway are two parlors with Victorian antiques and original ornate mantels. Here each evening, innkeepers Jim Kent and Stuart and Hermine Smith entertain guests with music and conversation. Before opening their bed-and-breakfast in April 1987, the three stayed at 150 B&Bs in six states to pick up ideas. Back in New Jersey, Hermine was a health-food retailer, Stuart was a choral director whose choirs appeared at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, and Jim was an accountant and ballroom-dancing teacher. (He’ll gladly give you a quicklesson.) Stuart is known to delight guests with a concert on the grand piano, or he might wind up an antique music box from the inn’s fine collection.
