Cheap Bed and Breakfast in Pennsylvania: General Sutter Inn, Lititz

This three-story, redbrick inn, built in 1764 in Georgian style, overlooks the Lititz village square. It’s said to be the oldest Pennsylvania inn in continuous operation. Originally known as Zum Anker, the name was changed in 1930 to honor John Augustus Sutter, the gold-rush pioneer who retired to Lititz. Richard Vetter was an Episcopal priest and then an assistant headmaster before becoming innkeeper here with his wife, Joan, in 1980. Inside, the decor is decidedly Victorian. In the parlor, there are medallion-backed sofas before the fire-place, marble-top tables, a pump organ, and crystal parlor lamps. Lovebirds and finches twitter in Victorian wire cages. Guest rooms are decorated with antique country and Victorian furnishings. The General Sutter is frayed around the edges just enough to add to its authenticity. There’s a spacious tree-shaded terrace out front, where you can relax and watch the passing parade of villagers, and it’s only a short walk to the Wilbur Chocolate Factory (the maker of Godiva hocolates) and the town’s lovely Moravian Square.
