You will understand why Al and Beth Granger chose this name (which means “glass barn” in Old English) when you see their country inn. Glasbern is a 19th-century German bank barn, tucked into a quiet valley 10 miles west of Allen-town, and the Grangers have recoil-structed it of stone, wood, and lots of glass. The Great Room resembles a lofty stone sanctuary, with a fireplace and hand-hewn beams that crisscross through the high, open spaces. Guest rooms are decorated traditionally, with standard antique reproductions, and in contemporary style with glass tables and wicker. Brick walkways lead to a farmhouse and a carriage house, both renovated and similarly decorated— there’s a certain sameness about the decor. All suites have whirlpool baths, and some have kitchenettes and private entrances. Nine rooms have fireplaces. |
