Tucked away on 1,280 acres in northwestern Pennsylvania near Allegheny National Forest, Glendorn was the summer retreat of the Dorns, who made their fortune in oil early in the century. Open to the public since 1995, it captures the spirit of rustic luxury. The lodge, a four-hour drive from Pittsburgh or Cleveland and 1½ hours from Buffalo, is for people who appreciate special places offthe beaten path.
The magnificent all-redwood main lodge was begun in 1929. Up to 30 guests can stay in four rooms here and in nearby cabins. The Dorns (who still use some cabins) left many family items such as china and books, which enhance the feel-ing of being at the home of a wealthy friend. Managers Gene and Linda Spin-ner are unobtrusive hosts who care for guests’ needs efficiently and pleasantly.
A two-story-high sandstone fireplace dominates the wood-beamed great hall where meals are served. You can relax on the sofas, have a snack from the butler’s pantry, or try billiards in the game room. Lodge rooms include the Green Suite, with a tiled fireplace and chintz sofa. All six cabins have fireplaces. The one-bedroom Miller Cabin has chestnut paneling and overlooks a stream; the three-bedroom Roost has pecky cypress paneling and separate baths in the master bedroom.
