Cheap Bed and Breakfast in Pennsylvania: Highland Farms, Doylestown

Bordering the Doylestown Country Club golf course is the 1740 fieldstone country manor that was once home to lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. Inn keeper Mary Schnitzer bought the estate and opened it as a bed-and-breakfast on Valentine’s Day, 1988. The elegant, high-ceilinged rooms are furnished in American and English antiques. Flanking a foyer with a grandfather clock and a Victorian pier glass are a spa-cious parlor and a formal dining room. Wicker and ferns fill a sunroom that overlooks a white carriage house, bank barn, and a 60-foot pool. The library is richly decorated with green velvet sofas and chairs and a collection of Hammer-stein memorabilia. You can spend cozy evenings by the fire here watching a musical from the video collection. Each bedroom is named and thematically decorated after one of Hammerstein’s mu-sicals.
