Mercersburg, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a historic village off I —81, an hour and a half from Washington, D.C. This country inn, on the outskirts of town, is an impressive Classic Revival redbrick structure with white trim, adorned with numerous porticoes, porches, and terraces.
It’s the kind of place where you expect something romantic has either already happened or will. In the entrance hall,
twin staircases wind dramatically to the second floor, and rose and green Scaglioli columns accent the chestnut wainscot-ing. The classic Arts and Crafts sum’oom has a tiled floor and fireplace, high beamed ceilings, and a wall ofbroad win-dows. It’s done in peach and blue, with flowered upholstery and curtains. You can sit back on the deep window-seat cushions and admire the stately grounds.
Restored antiques and locally handmade pieces fill the spacious guest rooms. You will find four-poster, canopy, and king-size beds. Some rooms have fireplaces; others have private balconies with views of the mountains. Three rooms have tiled, high-ceilinged bathrooms with an-tique needle showers, pedestal sinks, and freestanding tubs. Each bathroom has been meticulously restored to its turn-of-the-century grandeur.
