The porch around this yellow three-story inn just outside Canadensis is so high that when you’re on it you feel as though you’re up in the pines. In early 1994, Peter and Hannele Wawra, natives of Austria, took over the reins of the inn from previous owners Debbie and Arthur Bolger.
Peter has spent his career in the hospitality business; he man-aged the New York Yacht Club and, before that, Donald Trump’s Grand Hyatt Hotelin Manhattan. Guest rooms in this 1870 Victorian farmhouse are fur-nished in a mix of Early American reproductions and Victorian antiques. The rooms downstairs are warm and intimate. On cool evenings, a fire crackles in the stone fireplace in the living room, and from the window seat in the library you might see deer grazing on the lawn. Nothing’s fussy here, yet gourmet dinners in the dining room do attract a well-dressed following. The Bolgers will gladly point you to the trails for cross-country skiing on the inn’s 20 wooded acres or help you plan a drive down scenic back roads. |
