Cheap Bed and Breakfast in Virginia: Colonial Capital, Williamsburg

The Colonial Capital, a three-story frame house painted spring-mist green, is within walking distance of the historic district, Merchants Square, and the College of William and Mary. The exceedingly nice innkeepers, Phil and Barbara Craig, are a retired stock broker and a university administrator, respectively, who moved to Williamsburg after 25 years in North Carolina. The Colonial’s five rooms are named after Tidewater-area rivers. The York has an enclosed, green-canopied bed, and the second-floor Potomac room has a new private porch. Prettiest, though, is sunny Pamlico, with window seats and a white-canopied bed. The third floor can be made into a two-bedroom suite, a plus for families. Downstairs there’s a large parlor with a wood-burning fireplace and access to a screened-in porch and brick patio, where the Craigs keep games, books, and puzzles. In the rear, nearthe Colonial garden, is guest parking, which solves a serious problem in teeming Williamsburg.
