In her hands, Victoriana is thoroughly feminine, even though in one chamber, the Civil War Room, she’s tried to cater to the opposite sex, decorating with in-timate details ofmen’s 19th-century apparel. Large people of either sex will have a hard time moving freely in this wildly crowded bed-and-breakfast. Liz-zie’s Room, the favorite, has a king-size pencil-post canopy bed and a private bath with a double marble shower and claw-foot tub. The room enshrines the memory of a teenager who, Dot says, died of a broken heart when her beau failed to return from the Civil War. Prissy’s Quarters, a large upstairs room in the main building, has a kitchen area.
Breakfast is served in the dining room by candlelight. The brick-walled, beam-ceilinged downstairs tavern is a cozy sitting area with a fireplace, backgammon board, TV, and popcorn machine. There are also fireplaces in the dining room, a kitchen, a tearoom, and three bedrooms. Outside there’s an unrestored mill house dating from 1725, an antiques shop, gazebo, swimming pool, and formal 18th-century garden (which makes a delightful wedding setting). Edgewood is centrally located for touring the James River plantations.
6 double rooms with baths, 2 suites. Air-conditioning, TV and VCR in rooms, satellite TV in the downstairs tavern, tea room, turndown service, pool. $120—$188; full breakfast, light afternoon refreshments. American Eexpress, MasterCard, Visa. Smoking on porch and patio only, no pets, 2-night minimum holiday weekends, William & Mary graduation, Grand Illumination.
