Cheap Bed and Breakfast in Virginia: Nottingham Ridge, Cape Charles

More than 10 years ago, Bonnie Nottingham opened her brick Williamsburg-style house to guests. Built in 1975, it lies 2 miles off the main road, on a long stretch of private beach on the Atlantic Flyway. The land has been in the Nottingham family since the 18th century. This is a bird-watcher’s paradise, and the Birding Festival, held in October, brings an influx of visitors to the inn. The smashing Chesapeake Bay sunsets and visitations by herons and egrets enhance nature’s performance.
Inside, the inn is a cheerful place with two fireplaces in common rooms, a back porch, and four bedrooms. Romantics favor a downstairs room with wrought-iron bed and a homey down comforter. An upstairs room, with a private en-trance and separate sitting and sleeping room, is great for families. Bonnie is a warm, lovable host. Be sure to sample her country ham, sweet-potato biscuits, and homemade jam at breakfast. Exact directions to Nottingham’s Ridge (no signs exist) are given with reservation confirmation.
