Cheap Bed and Breakfast in Virginia: The Silver Thatch Inn, Charlottesville

The Silver Thatch is 7 miles north of downtown Charlottesville off U.S. 29. The oldest part of its semicircle of connected buildings is log, built by mercenary Hessian prisoners hired by the British during the Revolutionary War. Vince and Rita Scoffone became inn-keepers because they wanted to spend more time together (he was a workaholic banker). The inn is decorated in a snug country-Colonial style with richly colored walls and trim. The guest rooms all have quilts, down comforters, and antiques; fourhave fireplaces. The four cottage rooms and the Madison Room in the main house have sparkling new bath-rooms.
The restaurant menu, which changes every six to eight weeks, helps to generate a near-full house many nights; of-ferings have included Rock Cornish hen with a roasted-pepper walnut sauce, and panseared lobster with red pepper and mango marmalade. Vegetarian diners will also find a special each day. Since 1989 the wine list, featuring Vince’s picks, has received an award of excel-lence from Wine Spectator magazine. Silver Thatch guests may use a pooi nearby.
