In 1984 Suzy and Otis Huston spent the night at their first B&B. “Someday,” they said, “we’ll do this,” and they started a portfolio of properties and ideas. After a lengthy search they bought Thornrose and moved down from Buffalo, New York, where Otis had been in management with DuPont and Suzy taught school.
Thornrose has a light, fresh appearance. Windsor (all the guest rooms bear English names) has antique twin beds pushed together, with a white down duvet and white lace-trimmed pillows, and an antique armoire and dresser. Al-though it’s the smallest room, sunny Yorkshire is favored for its garden view and claw-foot tub. The blue-and-rose Canterbury Room overlooks bucolic Gypsy Hill Park, where there is a swimming pool, tennis courts, a golf course, and summer concerts. Guests might prefer just lingering on the wraparound veranda or in the flower-filled gardens, where an 80-year-old climbing, white hydrangea and a wisteria cover two arbors and where a stream of the area’s pure water dances in a new fountain.
