Because of its setting high above the Potomac River in a town with one traffic light, the Bavarian Inn is “country,” but it’s also the last word in luxury. That won’t appeal to everyone, because it
means the coat and tie go into the suit-case along with the jeans. Munich-born Erwin Asam, a former Washington restaurateur, and his Bnitish wife, Carol, have turned the 1930s mansion into a slice of Erwin’s homeland, with alpine chalets overlooking the river, dining rooms with the feel of an elegant mountain lodge, and an extensive menu loaded with German specialties. Everything’s here for a pampered stay, right down to the mints on the pillow. Despite big-hotel amenities, the Asams try to preserve a relaxed, personal atmosphere. Not up to the coat and tie? Slip downstairs to the wood-beamed, informal Rathskeller for dinner from the same menu, plus entertainment on weekends.
