Route 50, the main route across the state in the north, passes through the town of Romney at the South Branch of the Potomac River. Here you’ll find Hampshire House, a perfectly kept redbrick Victorian, on a street behind the courthouse. The house and its garden are owned by Scott Simmons and his wife, Jane, who also manage the property. A substantial breakfast of whole-grain pancakes, fruit waffles, or omelets is always included in the room rate.
Scott is a collector of antique lamps, which occupy tables all over the inn. The five guest rooms are lovely, decorated almost exclusively with Victorian antiques, including East lake beds, Rococo Revival chairs and settees, and quilts. In addition to the formal parlor downstairs, you’ll also find a big music room with a wide-screen TV, VCR, and pump organ.
