Cheap Bed and Breakfast in West Virginia: Highlawn, Berkeley Springs

Algernon R. Unger built this house for his bride, Chaffie Ziler. It’s a white Queen Anne cottage with a wide front porch and a tin roof that vibrates musically when it rains. The private suite has its own tin-roofed porch and handpainted Victorian furniture. All the bedrooms have lace-curtained windows, plump pillows, and turn-of-the-century furnishings, including brass beds and rockers. Owner Sandra Kauffman and partner Tim Miller also operate two other nearby properties: Aunt Pearl’s cottage, which has four Victorian rooms with private porches, and a romantic car-riage house with stained glass, library nook, whirlpool bath for two, VCR, and queen-size bed in an intimate loft. On Saturday (May—October and holidays) Sandra serves a gourmet silver-service dinner (not included in price) at High-lawn. Holidays are celebrated with special meals and decorations. On the Fourth of July, guests pitch in to crank the old-fashioned ice-cream maker. Breakfasts feature herb and low-fat dishes, a vegetarian offering, and such delicacies as lemon bread with lemon butter and chocolate-chip coffee cake.
