Cheap Bed and Breakfast in West Virginia: The Country Inn, Berkeley Springs

From the outside, the Country Inn in Berkeley Springs looks a little grander than the image the name summons up; it’s a four-story brick building, with a columned front porch, that was built in 1932. Then came a set of wings in 1937, and then, after former teacher Jack Barker bought the place in the early 1970s (because he disliked retirement), a conference center, motel annex, and spa out back. The additions haven’t damaged the integrity of the old inn much, for its rooms are still old-timey, with mismatched quasi-antiques; along, carpeted central corridor; and a country store downstairs. The inn is next door to Berkeley Springs State Park, but the spa facilities at the inn come with a view of the town and the ridge. The inn has two dining rooms, one a garden affair with a dance floor, where there’s live music on weekends.
