Cheap Bed and Breakfast in West Virginia: The Current, Hillsboro

The Current, a 1904 white frame farm-house with only a modest touch of gin-gerbread, stands along a winding country lane outside the town of Hillsboro, the birthplace of Nobel Prize—winning writer Pearl Buck and the site of the General Store, which sells everything from red Union suits and antiques to handmade butter and cheese carved from huge rolls. To reach the Current, follow signs for the Greenbrier River Trail, past fields inhabited by buffalo, peacocks, and llamas (part of a rich weekend farmer’s private zoo) and a one-room Presbyterian Church. The bed-and-breakfast is owned by Leslee McCarty, who came tothis part of her home state to work in rural community development. She is now active in several local groups, including the Greenbrier River Watershed Association. In fact, most ofher guests arrive on foot, bike, or by canoe from the nearby river trail and are thrilled with a soak in the hot tub and a quiet snooze on the porch. Leslee’s house is full of oak wood-work, quilts, Victorian clothing, and airy white curtains. She also owns the old church and plans to convert it to additional lodging to accommodate the demands of the cycling crowd.
