Cheap Bed and Breakfast in West Virginia: Woodcrest, Beckwith

It took school teacher Luther Lewallen and his wife, Judy, three years to overcome legal tangles and finalize the pur
chase of this 100-acre gentleman’s farm—and several more years to reverse the process of neglect and decay. The gray-shingled mainhouse, built in 1928, is shipshape now and comfortably furnished with reproduction antiques (and a few real ones). All rooms have queen-size beds, and the two largest rooms also have hide-a-bed couches. Just beyond the big red barn, 300 feet from the main house, is a four-bedroom cabin with barnwood siding on the interior, a kitchen, and a large screened porch.
Woodcrest is near Fayetteville, in the heart of West Virginia’s white-water rafting country. Trails for hiking and biking (rental mountain bikes are delivered to the inn) run through the property, and a Civil War cemetery on the property invites history buffs. Just a half-hour’s drive away, llama lovers can try trekking with the surefooted camel cousins carrying generous gourmet lunches (contact New River Llama Trekking Co., a first in the state, at 304/574—1117).
